Jana, I'm so sorry to hear that. My heart sank when I read your message, it's such an awful feeling. It makes me so angry to think that Ann Clare Collings has just done the same thing to you. Have you reported it? Did you transfer money via Western Union too?

Funny that she changed the name of the mother...I was told her mother's name was Tara Collings. Did they send you a copy of the mother's ID? Bet it's the same person as what I got, simply with the new name photoshopped on there.

In my case I spoke to the police here in Australia and over there in London, and neither wanted to help. They see it as such a small insignificant crime that they do nothing, but I don't think they have any understanding of just how widespread it is. I played along with Ann for 3 weeks when she asked for another $2K in the hope to nab her when she rocked up to Western Union to collect the money that I would have pretended to transfer. Police didn't want a bar of it, they said it was entrapment. If only the police would start to listen to the little guy and do something! They could head over to Lagos, Nigeria (where the majority of the Craigslist Paris scams are coming from) and arrest them all. Once you've got one, the rest follow!

In terms of getting the message out there, I suggest posting warnings on Craigslist. You have to conceal it though in an ad for an apartment or room...make it as appealing as possible e.g 340/Month - Magnificent place overlooking the Eiffel Tower, and then when people click on it they can read your warning.

Also check out http://parishousingscamwatch.wordpress.com - it's a blog that was set-up by a nice girl who helped me out with my fraud situation. I'm now co-author of it so when I have a minute I will post your message if you want?

If you do decide to post warnings on Craigslist, feel free to include the blog URL, it will drive a lot more traffic there and really help to spread the word.

Well found you as well...too late though lost $2000. Looking on Craigs list for a place for my duaghter in Septembers and ran across a Rebecca Dagg advertising 22 Ver Varnet she supplied Agreement and passport. Money went by Western Union to Mrs. Juliet Dagg (Mother) in London at 42, Salter Fort Rd. They said they needed another month at 500eu and that is when I found out it was a scam. her email was delaaw@hotmail.co.uk and Rebecca Dagg [reb_dag009@yahoo.com]

Almost happen to me, but I thoth it was too good to be truth.

Their names: Rebecca Dagg (reb_dag009@yahoo.com) and CHRIS LAWRENCE, who sended me a copy of his passport, which is clear thats false. his e-mail: hmmhra@yahoo.com. And he sended a contract papar sign for his lowyer, MARIA J COLE.

I was wondering if the scammers included pictures. I'm looking into a place in the 12th but once I googled the name that was on the outside of the building it came up with some sort of festivities hall for weddings and such and didn't really mention what I assumed to be the apartments above it. any clues?

I have been looking for a room/apartment for my son in Sweden and 100% of the replies I have had are scams. Usually if you google bathrooms or kitchens, you will find the same photos - usually of hotel rooms. Or they put in a luxurious kitchen with shabby old fashioned bedrooms that don't match.

One women even sent me a USA passport and USA License saying she was born and raised in California - yet she could not spell at all.

Once they had my email, I started getting 20 emails a day. They are desperate and it is very hard to keep positive about sending a son across the other side of the world...

For CRIS that posted two weeks ago, CHRIS LAWRENCE contacted me several days ago saying that he had an apartment in Sweden and immediately started hassling me to pay him a deposit. He wouldn't tell me the apartment number, said he was visiting family in Uk so couldn't meet me to show me apartment - but to send him the money immediately anyhow. I aske when he would be back from UK and he said he was taking a job in london and wouldn't be coming back. I called his bluff and said my sister would meet him in london and pay him and collect key. He then changed his story and said that he was going the following morning to Wales for a job, but SEND THE MONEY.....I told him I had sent it and gave him a false receipt number :) and didn't hear a word back from him as he thought he had the money......He send a scam contract, and gave me a bank account under his name, which I found odd.

I actually received two repsonses from two different people (this one was the second one) that had a very similar story - contract in Nigeria, they are now in England, etc).

I was looking for a room in Stockholm and I went on website se.easyroommate.com, and it's quite packed with scams so beware.

I incidentally had mails from :

- "chris lawrence" (hmmhra@yahoo.com)

- "Alisha Kid" (who said she was called Lund Tenby), (alisha.kid@gmail.com)

- "Christina McQuillan" (chri_mcquillan01@yahoo.com) : The mail has it all : money transfert, impossibility to meet the tenant, mother/father issue (late father in this case).

THIS IS KIM JOHNSTON. A man called Chris, that posted above and called me a drug dealer (you got to be kidding) IS A SCAMMER. He is a western union, lying, cheating scammer who wants you to send him money, but cannot possibly show you the unit. He gave me an address and my friend went around to check it (this was AFTER I told him I had sent him the money - which I had not) and someone else owned the apartment and had never heard of him.

CHRIS - YOUR BANK ACCOUNT DETAILS AND FAKE PASSPORT HAVE BEEN SENT TO THE FBI INTERNET FRAUD DEPARTMENT. YOUR DONE PAL.....

I don't know how to thank you for all of this nformation. I'm trying to find a place in Rome since a long time ago and I was going to close a treat with an apparent Rev. Thomas with ssothmas@yahoo.co.uk e.mail address. But only because of all of you information I wasn't defraud. He told me that he is a Rev and that actually his on a misionary trip in Nigeria. Then he ask me to send him the money by western Union. And because of that I tried to check information about him and then I found this page. I would beware of anything at a GMAIL address - 100% of them so far I have found to be scams. Also, they seem to be reading all the same - missionaries, putting everything in Gods hands, trust and honesty and they ALWAYS have a job transfer. Now that I have read so many, I can't believe I fell for it. The latest 6 ads on Craiglist Sweden are all Nigerian scams......

I was sent emails by Sara Thomas - the good Reverands wife, with EXACTLY the same story - but the apartment was in Stockholm Sweden.

Pay very close attention to the photos they send people - these people are not well educated and they will often send a photo of a kitchen and another of the dining room. If you look closely at the kitchen you can usually see a dining area in the background and it is different from the other picture. I have questioned this several times and been told that there are TWO dining rooms, or TWO kitchens.

Since reading your site, I have spent hours trawling the internet to see just how far this goes (its the journalist in me) and I am ASTOUNDED to see the huge numbers of scams coming out of Nigeria. All of the names given about, I see postings for apartments in Brussels, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, Paris - all the same people, same ads, just different addresses.

Fantastic job with this site - any site you see these scammers on, please advise the site manager of their name. Time to take a stand against these losers.

I have seen the same dining room advertised in Sweden and it shows 2 differnt bathrooms that don't even match with the rest of the apartment in style. BUT you get a free mobile phone.....l.

I encountered the same scam in easyroomate.com singapore site. The person who contacted me is called Mary Christina McQuillan and she claims to be a british national. Before I could even visit the apartment, she asked me to sign contract and send money to her mother. This is when I did a check on her name and found this site.

Zan, I get so many with the same story - wanting it sent to their mother.

I am like a woman possessed now, every time I see them on craigs list I copy the add and when people open it, I am there yelling BEWARE THIS ADD BELOW IS A SCAM. I have been getting so many emails from people telling me the saddest stories of losing money and asking how to detect the scammers. So am helping a few at the moment find apartments in Sweden (from the USA)

plink - I am actually an Aussie - from the Gold Coast - and looked at the craigs list just out of curiosity to see if they were there. I couldn't believe every third add was a scam..... BEACHFRONT APARTMENT IN BONDI, 3 bedroom luxury for 300 a week - YEH RIGHT!!!!!!!!

Literally just realised I've been frauded! By that stupid Sophie Astrid Marie Colombo (colombo.sophie@yahoo.com). Luckily my gut instinct & financial services training came in handy and I did some sniffing about before paying that cow any money. Got given several wrong mobile numbers for her, finally managed to get through on one and she sounded very un-French (even though passport she sent me was French). Thought she sounded Nigerian and that's what sent alarm bells ringing. This woman uses emotional blackmail, saying she's been messed about before, I need to pay money before seeing the apartment, through Western Union, to 24b Princes Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2AN.

Anna - don't be fooled by passports. When they ask for your details, they steal your identity. I have seen about 10 fake passports (some pretty good) fake US drivers licenses, and work ID's. They are all fake.

These fraudsters have so many different email addresses, phone numbers, etc. SHE DOES NOT have an apartment, she just wants to take your money and run! Hi, I got an email from her almost identically to this one, except the room was in Sweden. She sent me a passport showing her name and photo - but you could tell it was fake. If you are never sure - just say to them straight out "yes I would like your apartment, it sounds lovely. How do we do the lease and money arrangements" then they think they have you and will ask for all of your details for their "lawyer to draw up a lease" and then ask you to send it Western Union or to a bank account in the UK. BE CAREFUL and never give details to anyone or send money unless you have physically seen the apartment. You are much better off staying in a hostel or cheap hotel for a few days and going to inspect apartments when you get there.

we can't - they just keep changing names. They are on every website of craigslist and now starting on easyroommate.com. The one useful thing we can do is post here or any any board and make sure you put their name AND their email address and then in large letter BEWARE RENTAL SCAM - so that way if someone googles them they will be warned. I have found them to be totally flooding the Easyroommate.com site and the okflatmate.com as well. I have found it totally impossible to find my son accomodation over there because of these scum bags and now we are thinking that going to Europe isn't such a good idea. SCAM OUT OF WEST AFRICA.

BE CAREFUL EVERYONE. Dont use any email when exposing that can connect with your accounts in any way. I have just spent the last 24 hours trying to undo all the damage and change passwords, ring banks ect. IM NOT GIVING UP THOUGH - THE BASTARDS ARE NOT GOING TO WIN.............................................

yep, just from my email address they hacked into my computer and got passwords to EVERYTHING. Luckily they tried to transfer a shitload of money into my paypal account (which is a credit card) and I guess they were hoping that I wouldn't notice until the money came through and they had obsconded with it. I was just lucky I noticed an email from paypal and checked. I would recommend anyone that had received emails from these people to do a really good anti spy virus check (I used panda free download) and I got 8 hackers and one keeps trying to get in but keeps getting denied access.

If everyone runs an anti virus and anti spy they will know for sure if they have been hacked and save any future drama.

Also he send me a contract which I shoud have signed "as soon as possible". His own signature(and signature of lawer(that looked almost the same)) was really wierd and strange

Then when I refused to send him money and contract he asked me to send money to MYSELF in oder to collect them and to give him immidiately in his presence.

I just answerd him No and told that I gave the contract to my Lawer - to check it.

His last message really reminded a druguser, but not "a busy man who hates time wasters"

I did a really big mistake that I send him my personal info. Do you think that he can use it in future?But my biggest mistake - I sent him a copy of my transfer of money to uni (as a payment for my studies)( as a confirmation that I CAN pay). Hi Darai,

When they got me, all they had was my email address. From that they were able to access my computer, my bank accounts, my stockbroking accounts and copies of my passport I keep on there. You should ring the police and notify them and ask what you should do. One of the things they do with passports is use them to trick other people. To make themselves look honest, they will use your name and send a copy of your passort to someone so they have proof of who they are sending money too. You will end up with a lot of police complaints against you that people will lodge as they will think it was you after seeing your passport.

Definately report it to the police so it is on record that someone has stolen your information - that way if they use it you are covered.

Several months ago, I read this and posted it on my blog, News From France, see above URL... Just recently, 2 weeks ago, my friend was conned out of 1500 euros for a sublet in Paris.. Two guys who were "French" showed her the apt, had her sign a bogus contract, and gave her copies of their passports, doctored EDF (electric) bill and French ID.. along with 3 different numbers where they could be reached.. She went to move in and all their stuff was still there, though they said they were going to move it out the day before that... She kept checking back at the apt, calling the numbers repeatedly with no respose.. and finally.. about a week later when she was at the apt, she met another guy who had the keys to the apt, as well as her.. and was also a victim of their elaborate scam... So, the crooks got away with 3000 euros!!! My friend and the guy went to the police who LAUGHED and their faces and said the subletting is ILLEGAL and that they should have gone with an agency!!! Even if there is a real estate agency involved and their is still a scam, then the victim is more likely to get the money back from the agency because they will be able to file a police report.. My friend was not allowed to file a police report!! I posted a story about this on my blog on Sept. 8, 2008.. Please read and if anyone reads French, there is a link that explains this scam.... When it comes down to it.... It's hard to even trust the newpaper ads or internet listings for renting an apt... If it costs a bit more to pay an agency to help find an apt... and you are actually IN Paris and have some time to look around, please consider this.. Also, if you are out of the country and want to rent ... try to find people you know.. friends... who know someone... Good luck everyone and don't get scammed.. Great job PLINK!!!! ---

I recently had an issue with "Rev Thomas." I knew something was up with the price and other things I noticed that were strange in the e-mails. The emails were VERY similar to Mauds and Pdc. Fortunately, my family advised me against it and to do some snooping around. I came to this page and thanks for all of your comments I have not fallen into his trap. These people should be very ashamed of themselves especially using God to try to get you sucked into their lies. It's AWFUL. My ID has been given out to him though (my license). Guys - in order to locate the origin of the email go into your email program and if you have a snoop around you will find something (often located in the drop down menu) that says "Show Full Header", "Display Long Email Header" or something similar. Make sure this is active. Then when you receive an email, look in the header. You will see a series of I.P's that look something like this 130.34.25.09. Look for the "Originating IP" which is usually found down the bottom. Copy this number and paste it into the search field on www.domaintools.com/whois .... this will tell you where the person is emailing from.

If you copy the wrong IP the country won't pop up. Go back and search the other IP's down the bottom of the header. You will eventually stumble upon the right one and will then know exactly where to look in the future.

Please note - gmail DOES NOT display originating I.P's. As a result, you will notice A LOT of scammers email from gmail.

Thanks Plink, you made some great points in this post. One thing I will say is that when you are asked to send money ViA western Union or MoneyGram, most likely its a scam. Scammers love these money transfer companies and I personally think that they should be held responsible for the lost of many people or at least do something. Also, if whatever deal you looking at is too good to be true, stay away and if you hear NIGERIA just run and dont look back.

I just found a post on craigslist for a 4 bdrm home for rent in Vallejo,CA. When I received a response so quickly it set off some flags...

Here is the exact letter I received as a response:

There were many things about the letter that made me leary, but most of all when the letter said he left items in the home. I went to the county assessors online program and researched the property, the taxes on the property are due in the amount of $1461.32. Public Information laws restrict giving owner information online, but I did start digging. I did a search on his name in publicrecordsnow.com and there 6 listings with multiple aliases for a few of them. I searched the name with the address in google and found nothing linking the two. I even found a second listing for the same house with a local contact charging 2050.00 for the same unit. I called the local contact and he stated that the original posting that I responded to was wrong and did not want to have a discussion about the possibly still renting the unit. I searched the phone number listed in the letter, and found it listed in a previous post on this website. You have truly saved my family a world of pain and financial trouble.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for being a good person and allowing everyone to have access to this scam and possibly many others.

Hello.

I just realized i was scammed by the same people as you all, two days ago. The ad was on appartager.com, a student room mate finder of sorts, she represented herself as Stephanie Peer. Her email was steel_pep@yahoo.com, i was directed to send my money to her mother "Claire Peer" in London and was given this same fake address. I lost $2,200 right out of my college fund, everything looked so legitimet including the contract and everything which i had a lawyer look over and all! I was even sent a passport photo of a girl "stephanie peer" a British citizen. The apartment i was shown was supposedly 56 Rue Vernet, Paris. Hope this helps.

Rev Thomas and wife Sara are active again in melbourne. i have had several email correspondence with them and they replied with such speed that i grew suspicious, the flat was also extremely cheap for what it is. they are listing on craigslist. guess they don't know the beauty of what comes up when you google their name.....they are using the same email address of:

and the apartment is on 58 latrobe street, melbourne. as soon as i googled other apartments in the building, of which all have electrice cooktops, but i was told that their apartment has a gas one, that made me quite suspicious as this is a highrise building and gas does not only go to one apartment.

anyway, look out people, if its too good to be true, it usually is!

Oh, and it's impossible to view the apartment because she's out of the country!!! Hi, I've been in communication with 'Harry Lindsay' for the past couple of days regarding the let of a double room at 31 Monument Street, Holborn, London, EC3R 8BT. Although his story and terms of a letting contract seemed plausible, 'Harry' began to look dodge when he said he couldn't meet up with me to discuss the contract face-to-face and hoped that I wouldn't mind! Hmm! After this bizarre twist I searched for his e-mail address on the Internet 'hmmhra@yahoo.com' and I found this forum… O.k., so I know it was a great looking apartment and it was only £400/month for a double room - but do I really think I've been stupid to believe 'Harry’s' story - absolutely not! And that’s where people get scammed - it all seems plausible - until it comes down to the money. These types of forums are the only kind of security (dare I say Policing) that the average web user has. My thanks to all of those people who take the time to tell their stories - as tragic as some unfortunately are. I got off lightly... but I owe a big thanks to people like Chris. So Cheers. Hannah x

Scammer for sydney apartments, this apartment was said to be 2 bedrooms 2 bathrooms 1 carspace at 1802 Bathurst st Sydney. she said she changed jobs and went to Italy for 3yrs, taking the keys with her. which is of course when the alarm bells go off.

lets use commonsense here people. everybody has one friend or a family member or a realestate agent who can hold the keys so you can check out the apartment. everyone. and frankly if they didnt do you really want to move into a place previously owned by someone akin to jack the ripper?

Hello, I was looking for a room in Rome and the same happened to me almost twice. First name is CHRISTINA MCQUILLAN and second MARTINA BIA! Both went with the exact same story. You know... beginns with something sad to wind you up: father died, mother crazy,... then: I hope you understand my conditions, but my lawer..., and then the best: they send you a copy of their passport. And you go on believing them, because that seems so trusty.

So mean, thank god I didn´t pay, I never have any money left! But when I came to Rome I saw, that there was no apartment like posted. Im still looking, so I´m sure I will find more of these bastards.

Just wanted to add another name and e-mail to the list: Scammer = Allen Collins(collins.allen842@gmail.com). Same idea as the above posts. He states to have good cheap housing in different areas of USA but cannot show them because he 'works' in London. He will ask for Western Union money transfer with UPS acting as a 3rd party. Do not fall for it! The UPS docs given seem super legit but are not. Hope no one gets trapped. Good job with the site!

"Darren Fergie" is a scammer. We received EXACTLY the same email as Jonathan posted here as a warning. He received the email signed with the name and email mubmui@yahoo.com, Michael Alan. We received it under the name "Darren Fergie" with email labeo3182@yahoo.co.uk, and that time he claimed to let a flat in Brussels on the address Stevinstraat 105, Brussel 1000 Belgium.

I just wanted to add that these people (at least some of them) are doing the scam the other way as well. We have a legit apartment to rent, and we're getting responses to our craigslist ad from these people. The first one posted as "Derek Wolly" and is using the email address "derek_wolly@live.co.uk". He fits all the profile info you posted above, and also claims to be a member of the Royal Angels Scounting Team.

So if any of you are also renting a place, beware of these postings too!! They want to send you the money in advance to secure the apartment, but the company will send you "too much money" and you have to refund some of it for his moving expenses. I'm sure the company check is no good and then you lose out the real money that you send him... either that, or they ask for your bank account number, and once they have that along with all of your contact information, they've got a lot of your identity. Either way, I'm not going to find out, as they are definitely a scam!

I also ran across the scams when I was looking for an apartment in Geneva, so be careful everywhere! Trust your instincts, see it in person, and be careful when you part with your money!!

Today I had a scam mail from Laura Williams . Please be carefull about the following answer:

His memories lingers in my heart daily and each time i look at his picture and eversince my mother has been in Essex, London managing my fathers firm and also handling some of our assets.. What more do i tell about my family.....!!! I have a kid brother and sister who are in school and living with my mother in Essex. About myself: I have lived all my life abroad and studies abroad as well but want to continue my master here to learn some dutch and know more about my culture. Well i am a non smoker, i love to read and play games, i love computing,cooking and enjoy watching people enjoy my meal and see them happy eating and finishing it. I enjoy going to the beach during weekends and also love music and watch movies at my spare time or go to cinemas. I am a degree holder in human and environmental studies and thus i am furthering my career in the university doing my masters in international science for human aswell and working aswell as an analyst, so i do not stay home that much except weekends mostly Sundays this is due to the act that i go to school after work daily including Saturdays as well. Flat Ammenities: The rooms that are for rent with this following facilities, a small fridge in each room, a big freezer in the kitchen,it is also furnished, have a TV connected to a cablet and also a sound system all for your entertainment purpose, a big twin bed that sleeps two people conveniently, private entrance and exit, private toilet and bathroom,parking space,washer and drier, it is air-conditioned,my kitchen is fully equipped also coz i do alot of cooking and so i have microwave oven, gas cooker and so many for your heating and cooking needs.There is connection to internet via wireless and LAN and also Broadband aswell for your computing purpose, so you can come with your laptop or desktop if you have one. Price for the room: I am leasing 1+ bedrooms out, so i need responsible people as flatmates . The two bedrooms i have for rent both have double sleeper twin bed and the price is 400 euros excluding utilities.. However, for utilities which includes: water, gas refill, electricity bill, laundry, parking space and internet charges as well and there are lots more which are not included amounts 50 euros including council tax as well So the total to pay monthly is about 450 euro including utilities charges. Being a first timer in my flat, a security deposit of 600 euros from you as requested by my mother which is to serve as a guarantee of safety of the rooms/flat either in my presence or absence, which is refundable at the end of your stay in the room if nothing was destroyed either by you or any of your guest who might come in the future I can offer to rent for weeks if that's what you want as a short rent. I can rent the rooms for a long term lease but i will prefer a 3 months contract so we can be able to get to know ourselves better and after which the contract is renewable monthly or for a longer period. What made it obvious to me is that they had exactly the same storyline, about having a deceased father and a mom living in London. And of course they asked for the money by Western Union to the same address in London

'ive received the same e-email about the Mom living in London, Isabel Garcia asked from me my address and ID copy; till them all was going as usual on this kind of transaction. but them on the next e-mail she wanted me to make a transfer via Western Union for her, and i thought that was suspicious, looking trought internet for information i found the website..if anyone finds a 'joaquim alves de lima' ad over the net, that was the name i've sent her, please let me know

This blog is great, you're saving lifes! The post by Maurits gave me the information I couldn't believe: Christina McQuillan just sent me EXACTLY THE SAME e-mail, but with another address in Stockholm!! I insist, exactly the same e-mail, among others we shared, of course. She could hardly spell and write (although she was supposed to be born in England), many of her mails lacked of a greetings or goodbye expression, just direct to the money stuff... Even I mentioned I didn't want to be fooled and I needed a guarantee and she answered me: "What kind of proof do you need from me now?". Amazing... be very very careful, please!

Thank you very much again for this blog. By the way, if you want the e-mails I shared with her (or him) I have them all, including the agreement form "she" sent me, the scanned copy of her passport and the pictures of the flat. She's now using this e-mail address: tymaroom01@yahoo.com

Also, I contacted with another person who I'm afraid is a scammer, as well, beacuse he shows all the typical things, but I won't post here his name and e-mail address in case I'm wrong.

After this email I managed to have a conversation with mr Jude Freeman in Nigeria who was pressing me to send a deposit TODAY!! When I said I didn't even know if they had any documents to prove so they made sure they sent me a certificate of ownership.

After few others exchange via email and telephone( yes they even called me from Nigeria to my UK mobile number!!) then i have received the last email, after which I got suspicious, googled fraud deposit tenants and I found you and your article which completely saved my life today!

I was scammed out of $4500 dollars when I accepted a position as a "personal assistant". It seems so ridiculous now but they lure you with that quick $500 you think you are making. I think something needs to be done about money orders and transfers. I realize it was my own fault but when bank tellers deposit money orders for customers they should be saying: "Please be advised that this money order may take weeks to clear and if it is found to be counterfeit you will be held responsible for it and therefore you will owe the value of it."

Anyway, my guy was named Michael Munoz, his email was mnunozinc@yahoo.com.

I searched the internet and he has postings all over.

I also got a answer to my ad from SABRINE SCHRODER... a nice room in a beautiful flat ("she" sent me some pictures) in Amsterdam!!! All that for only 400 Euros, which is very cheap for Amsterdam. Well, I also got a copy of her passport and thougt, everything is fine, until I googled her name and found this blog.

She told me something about her, and what she does (lives now in London, but want to move back Amsterdam...). And she wanted me to send a security deposit and the rent of the first month (1000 Euro) to the bank account of her mother, who lives in Spain...

Very similar to the mail from her which is mentioned above from Socrates...

Only the e-mail adress changed: her new one is: amsterdam.sabrineschroder@yahoo.com

She contacted me via easyroommate.com!! BEWARE!!!

I had been corresponding with 'Sabrine Schroder' 'amsterdam.sabrineschroder@yahoo.com' for several days and got the exact same email as above. I was given a phone number 447031901811 and email address of her family lawyer 'Barrister Joy Moses' - email address 'barr.joymoses@live.co.uk'. I called and spoke with this 'lawyer' allegedly from the UK but barely spoke a word of English. I was about to wire 1000 euro to them this afternoon but doublechecked websites just in case. I'm SO GLAD I came across this site. Thank you so much Socrates! You just saved me tons of money. Everyone be careful of these con artists!

Have wasted a day (but thankfully no money) talking to scammers from Craigslist in my search to find a flat in Paris.

You may want to add these guys to your list. The ones that weren't smart enough to use the untraceable gmail, I all traced back to Nigeria.

The majority offered too good to be true prices on flats, stated they were working abroad on contract work (China and London) and would send the key to me in the post or claimed to be religious people.

Many also specified that tragedies had taken place in their life - the flat belonged to his/her deceased parents etc.

I think that the most important thing when finding a flat here is to come here first. to me it seemed incredible that anyone could fall for these scammers (i have responded to three craigslist posts and had three similar, but poor scams). i suppose that if you are abroad, say in the states, then you will have to arrange things in advance and it would not seem to untoward.

i recomend googling particuliers a particuliers, which is an agency free website that has been useful and trustwrthy in my case. the scammers primarily target websites aimed at americans and expats like craigslist and fusac. i would recommend not using craigslist at all anymore as it seems effectively broken. other recommended websites include seloger, which is a fairly standard lettings website. or type locations and particuliers in french google.

be aware that in my experience things like washing machines and ovens are extremely rare in appartments going for less than 1000euro´s.

on the flipside i have lived in paris for 7 months now in a flat which is central has wifi etc 30m2 and 650 a month. mý girlfriend rents nearby for 550. ironically i rent from a guy who had to move to nigeria for work! but of course i was able to see the flat meet the guy etc.

most important is to spend some time in paris loóking so that you can go to the flat. if you cannot do this then find someone who can on your behalf or use a trusted agent. it will save you money in the long run. good luck! don't let the bastards grind you down

laura's post proves my point about going to the city first. london is one of the most expensive cities in the world. mayfair is the smarest richest part of london (the ritz bond street etc) and one could easily expect to rent a place for upwards of £1000 a week, if you got a good deal. you would struggle to find a bedsit in crime ridden hackney, in october,long term for 100 a week. if you go to mayfair you will see pretty quickly that 100 a week is impossible- laughable even. sorry if i lay my point on a bit heavy. people are primarily targetíng english and americans because they think that we are stupid. they wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't working. prove em wrong...

I did a search for this guy's name and this site came up. I knew I'd see his name in one of the comments. I got the same exact email, except the address of the apartment is different. Too bad more people don't check the internet before they dive headlong into these types of things. Even though I didn't give him any personal information, he does have my real name and the corporation I work for, so I immediately changed my password so he can't find out anything else about me. I hope I did it in time!

"She" has also scammed people in Paris and UK and probably many other places.

"She" wrote that she had a room available, that she was originally from Nederland but she was living in Winterthur and that she was living alone cause her father had died and her mother, because her job, was in London for one year.

So now "she" has got my ID and money. So if any time you see that "Natalia Cortés" is renting rooms somewhere, it's not me!!!!

I have just read the name Christina McQuillan and I think I have been scammed too because I made a deal some weeks ago with "her" and she asked me to send 500 euros through western union to "her mum" in England but i didn't have any answer since then. Everything matches and I don't know what to do know because I'm supposed to get in my appartment in 6 days and I'm afraid it doesn't even exist. Is there any way to report this?

I have recieved an email from someone based in the UK saying i have inherited money from soething, and this email was sent by rdagg1969@hotmail.co.uk and i don't know if i should trust this...I have been scammed by people in the UK before, and this sounds like it may be legit, but I'm not buying it. I'm from Canada, and any advice on this matter would help immensley.

Oh, by the way, stupidly, I sent my passport image, so if you see KIM DEUN (me) passport image ( I think they can use my image, too, to cheat somebody else), be careful.

Just got an email from one Kelvin Motero (same email as Dave has given). Wants to buy my house in Ontario, Canada (which is currently for sale privately) with a certified cheque. No questions asked except to confirm the cost and address- already given in his original email subject. Unhunh. This is the last straw for me, no more Craigslist. Too many crazies for my taste.

I was curious about this guy and found this thread when I Googled his name. Obviously I will not be responding to him. Thought I'd post here since there seems to be a mile long thread going of this guy (and others). He has given info of his supposed workplace and when I checked it online- there is a real website. Wonder which part is falst- the actual agency and website or his supposed employment there?

Hey guys, I think I've just dealt with a scammer.

CHRISTINA MCQUILLAN again. This time, in Sydney, she used the email "christina88_1983@yahoo.com"

Beware of her. If you send an email demanding for a room, she'll reply somehow like:

"Am Mary Christina Mcquillan,am 25 years old, My father owns the flat but is now late ,i live alone in the flat, Am a professional, I have been pretty busy , i work as a wedding planner. and this is taking too much of my time, so am a busy type, if you don't mind ? however, the room is still available"

Then she kept urging me to transfer money via Western Union to her mom in London.

I requested to have my friend inspect the house for me and give the deposit directly to her since I'm not in Sydney but she tried to find ways to escape the inspection. I insisted not transferring the money before the room had already been inspected by my friend, then she told me that someone had promised to pay the deposit on Friday.

She will send people who are interested in the room she advertised a Rental Agreement Form which is written by her family lawyer (as she shall says), then urges them to send money to her mom, then the signed Form.

So if you guys feel something wrong, may be it's really not right.

Try to search for everything related to the landlord and make sure that your money is in safe hands.

Don't transfer money to any landlord if any of the following symptoms appears:

1. Landlord urges you or keeps mentioning that you have to transfer deposits to his/her parents via Western Union so theat he/she can reserve the accomodation for you

2. The pictures of the room are at different sizes

3. The price of the accommodation is amazingly cheap compared to similar places

Take a really close look at the scanned passport/driver license, google their names and see if any scam related to that name. You best get someone who you can trust to inspect the places for you before proceed any money transfer.

Thanks God I found this website so that I'm not tricked by this scammer. And thank you DEUN KIM and MAURITS, I received the exact emails as you guys did. So I didn't fall for this scam.

I got a reply from "Anita Lovely", listing all the things in this apartment, the location (28 rue de cherche-midi), that she was working in London and only wanted 300 euro per month and 400 euro deposit! I was thrilled at the idea of this but was suspicious considering the prices of studio apartments in the same region seem to be easily twice this price. So, I found this site and checked out the IP address - turns out she isn't in London, she's actually in Lagos!

Hi, we've just been scammed by a person called Keith Davis keith.nyholidays@live.com renting an apartment in nyc at 87w 57th st on the Craigslist website. Judging by google street view I doubt whether the building ever existed! initially we were asked to wire 30% deposit into his "accountant's" bank account Valerie Adams a/c 4245357466. At his insistence a month later we stupidly wired another 30% deposit into another account under the name of Julie Cooper a/c 863257911. When he asked for the full balance now instead of on arrival we pulled out and requested a refund..guess what...haven't heard from him since. Lesson learned. Hope these postings help out other innocent people before they too part with their hard earned cash.

It is absolutely sickening that people are out there scamming, I have sent a response which I will post below as I didn't want to scare them off but wanted to find out as much information as possible.

I got this while I was trying to find a place in Paris, France. I strongly believe its a scam beaware:

The email used was Wimster Lemaitre . I emailed one of the reference and he sent me an email and number and when called no one picked up.

Add "Rev" Joe Cole and his wife to the list. They're putting up all these ads for $500 to $600/month (that's super-cheap, here) one bedroom apartments in LA. Joe is supposedly in London on a mission trip, wife is in Oregon. They do the whole "I don't know how to put a friggin' SPACE after a comma or a period" writing style, call water "hydro," etc. You can spot that they're scammers from a mile away, but hey, apparently some people believe anything, so, be warned... Personally, I can't believe people fall for this stuff, and I almost feel like they deserve it (not the people whose homes get unfairly listed as being for rent when they're not, but the people who send money, I mean). THIS IS WHY CRAIGSLIST SAYS TO DEAL ONLY WITH **LOCAL*** PEOPLE, IN PERSON!!! You can't follow instructions? You must like giving your money away then.

They have proposed me, the 15.06.2010, a pretty good and pretty cheap flat in Paris, rue des Rosiers, 400 eur a month, and 600 eur security deposit. The "landlord" wrote me it was his late father's flat, and was asking me in he's every massage to promise him I will take proper care of it. Then they maid me send them a copy of my passport and 1000 eur via Western Union, promising to send me the key via UPS. I have payed and of course, I have got nothing. I have mailed my questions, and the "landlord" told me that his family lawyer was asking for 400 eur more, as security deposit. When I refused to pay the extra money he told me that the contract is terminated, and he will return me 700 eur, keeping 300 for breaking the contract. The conversation took place today, the 19.06.10, but I hardly believe that I could get something back on Mondey.

Unfortunately I can't provide the ID, as it was from a gmail address (me too I use the gmail, so we even could chat) but here is the name and the e-meil of the scamer:John Louise , first name: John, family name: Andre. And I am Marina Gister, and I wonder what to do now to make sure they will not scam the others with mu passport, or better to say, I am really affrayed they will.

WAIT, these names that you are posting may actually be the names of the scam artists victims. The scam artists change their names regularly and also use peoples names that reported them or were victims to them. They change the email addresses too and I found this type of scam in Seattle and Orange county CA apartments posted on Craigslist too. They are working internationally. This scam may be done by one person or a group or may be a scam any scam artist will try. The main thing to be careful to not do is, as you said, do not transfer money via cash wire transfer to any stranger EVER. I'm sure your post has helped many. Thanks much.

ridiculous stuff. wilfred jane is also a scammer, just sent him back a funny response. would pay the amount he was gonna fraud just to see the expression on his face when he reads it.

look out for people who have 'standard' names.. jane, tara, george, elizabeth.. also with unprofessional email addresses with numbers and underscores in between.

baaaaaad english is another easy way to realise, dont be fooled by desperation in finding a place to stay, it almost fooled me!

They are on Craiglist renting Paris apartments by just copying and pasting info from authentic sites.

You know what-- these real Paris agencies should 'disable' the right click function on photos.

This scammer crowd have copied the glorious photos from the authentic site and added their blurb at a great price.

Nearly got taken in but then wondered about the error filled language.

Does anyone close them down once a complaint is made?

I did not completely fall for a scam but was pretty close to it. Thank God almighty I found this sight. I am going to study in Paris this september and have been having the hardest time finding an apartment online. I came across one that sounded amazing but were asking for money. She was going by the name of Aisha Qureshi and said she lived in London and to wire money to her mom. I never got to that point as my mom and I had decided that no money would be transacted unless done in person.

Sadly, I made the mistake of sending a scan of my passport. My name is Andrea Gamez so just in case you see anything under that name, I am not selling anything, nor will I be.

I just came across another under the name of David Cannoh whic is uses the same e-mail template about him having to leave w/ his wife and son and money being no object just wanting the place to be taken care of. He however is saying that he is in Shang Hai.

Thank you once again for this website, I am very appreciative because it will definitely help me avoid scams. The downside is I am a bit discouraged and do not think I will be using craigslist at all anymore :(

Although passports are sent they are obviously fake, and her email IPS are from America

someone with the email address "volcom424@gmail.com" who claims to be called betty knowles tried to sell me property to rent. this is one of her emails:

'The apartment is located in the center of paris Marais. I will be

expecting the form and the deposit soonest possible. You will send the

deposit to me via western union money transfer but in my secretary

name cause i am very busy officially and might not be able to confirm

the payment but my secretary can do that for me if the payment is sent

to her name.

Hence, you will send the payment via western union to the name and

address below.

Name: DEBORAH REED and the address is 45 Ave avenue, London, UK'

she never signed her name at the end of the emails and sent me what i suspect the be a fake or stolen passport i.d claiming i would have to transfer money to her before i could see the actual apartment because she now lived in germany. the price of her so called 'luxury apartment' was really cheap -too good to be true.She was also very vague about details of the property that i asked about eg (what area of paris the apartment was in)but sent me lots of photos to seem genuine

I was trying to rent an appartment in Geneva, from two different guys via expatriates web address. I got suspicious because they were giving me more or less the same information and asking for same details for the contract. What put me off completely was the request to send the money via Western Union transfer as his bank account got robbed last time somebody was supposed to send him the deposit for apartment, some story like this. The e-mail addresses from the two guys are:

about a month ago i was looking on craiglists website for a flat in amsterdam found a perfect one and emailed the woman.everything seemed perfect and lagit i spoke to her so called lawyer on the phone loads of times and she sent my a scanned copy of her passport rental agreements and even her bank details for a barclys bank!! so i sent her first months rent and deposit of 1000 pounds!! she then asks for more money and her email didnt really make sense so i look up craiglists scammers website and found she had sent the same email to me and 2 other people and had scammed them to but used another name with one of the woman.When i seen this i was devastated took it to the police but they are usless.I want to find this woman and stop her because she has all my details she could basically use my identity.She is still scamming people!I no the lawyer is in nigira because when i couldnt get through to her on her mobile it asks for nira or something currency so i typed it in to google and it came up nigera!!Also the police said that someone took MY money out a bank in lutin near london!!Please if anyone can help me catch this evil woman!! iv never had that much money before and was my only 1000pounds and its gone stolen by some greedy heartless peron!! the woman i emailed and who addvertised the flat was EMMA LOUISE PERRY!!! and her so called lawyer ANITA CATHERINE SMYTH!!! here is her number that i can still get through and she answers!! so feel free to prank call her!! 07031939293. Watch out for this name as well: "Sara hartkins" . The deal looked too good to be true, so I figured it might be. The said they are in Nigeria now due to husband's work transfer and that got me thinking. She mentioned the deposit as well. I googled all that information, and got a bunch of apartment scam sites and warning signs, I was shocked to learn there are apartment scams.

Now, I got one (my hubby and I are looking for an apartment) with the guy, the owner and his wife, being in another state. Saw the pictures of the apartment, they look gorgeous and for the price, looks too good to be true, so I won't even proceed with finding out more, it already looks fishy. Name of the guy is "Michael Lund" . Don't know if it's a fraud, but looks suspicious. Be careful all!

Yes, this is a 2 bedrooms apartment and you will have one security parking. The first deposit is $2500 (1 month rent + $1500 bond). Obviously we need a way to complete this deal that will allow us to make sure we receive what we want. I went through a large extensive search to figure out how this scam works and was able to contact freehostia.org and have their newest site ring taken down. PLEASE post any new sites they use for scamming and I will do my best to shoot it down.

I'm pretty sure this is another scam concerning Munich / Germany (sorry, no IP available).

Hello,

If we decide to proceed with this transaction, I will have to contact DHL and provide them all the necessary information, so they can start the process right away. I will need your full name and address for that. You will receive a notification from DHL shortly after that, together with all the instructions to follow and the invoice as well.

Regarding the payment, you will be instructed to deposit the money ( 365 EUR the rent for a month + 365 EUR SECURITY DEPOSIT) to an DHL agent. They will hold and insure your money until you check the apartment and decide if you want take it or not. That is how their buyer protection policy works. As soon as the funds have been deposited into their agent name, they will immediately start the shipping process.

The keys and rental contract will be delivered at your address in no more than 3 working days. You will be given a one day inspection period from the day you receive the keys and contract at home. If you decide to hold the apartment, then you will have to authorize DHL to release the funds to me, and the transaction will be completed. That is why you should deal with an agency. You think that you don't want to pay agency fee but you actually pay to protect yourself from scams like that! Agency will not steal from you, these people are there to secure your new home and help you with problems you may encounter!

If you want a good trustworthy agency in Paris, google VINGT Paris agency. They propose fully furnished apartments portfolio with a choice of concierge service. They will take care of everything you might need!

And do not go to any scams!

It doesn't just cause issues for renters. I've been on the other side as well. One of the apartments I have was used in a scam. The apartment was for rent at the time too. Its not exactly easy to have to deal with a person who is convinced that they have rent the apartment when they show up.

I got cussed at because the key didn't work, which was rather confusing since I had no clue who this guy was or why he thought his key should work in what was a vacant apartment.

I depend on the rent as my income. Its not like I can just give the guy the apartment. Deposit exists for a reason. Not to mention that the rent he thought it was is ridiculous. Its way too low to be realistic. Considering the situation I might have been willing to negotiate the price and work something out for deposit expect for the fact when I ran a tenant screening report like I normally do at http://www.tenantverification.com/ I found the guy had bad credit and a minor criminal charge.

Tell they guy that I couldn't rent to him because he didn't qualify was real fun. I swear you would think that I was the one who scammed him. But what can i do? I'm not willing to put myself at risk for a tenant just because a listing for a two bedroom apartment for 650 didn't make in suspicious when I've don't think I've seen a single bedroom apartment in this area go for less then 800.

i was just going to reant an apartment in singapore, and I'm kind of sure it's a scam . It's too good to be true, and the email described on the apartment is just like scammer who describes their property. Also asking to wire the money, reserve ASAP, and etc. How can I send this email to you?

Hello, so sorry this happened to you. I am on the other end having a vacation rental and yes, I too get to deal with scammers. Be aware, no US certified cheque should be accepted within 4-5 weeks of receiving as payment.Usually they want lots of info, cannot be a post office box, send with Fed-Ex, employers pays for vacation etc. These cheques are fraud but it takes the bank 4- 5 weeks to find this out. Then, never EVER send or give the accidental ( yeah, right) overpayment back to them; another scam. I just got almost scammed by asking to list my property with Vaway, a supposed vacation rental website; check when the owner get paid! they take the credit card payment and pay ( by certified check?, LOL ) the owner the day after people move in. Any owner letting anyone without having the fund first No Way they have a free vacation without paying, or you honestly paid and the owner kicks you out due to non payment. They claim to be partner with Travelocity, a legit business; I emailed them, and they said No, never heard of them!!! Also a known scammer is Travis Larson, supposedly located in England, but bet he will change his name soon. So, both sides have to be careful, and those new to internet crap, NEVER open a supplied link inside your email. copy it and go to the search bar and look at it from there if you want to look at it. inside your email they got disk access. virus etc.

Please, email all friend, family, post on facebook etc. It is the only way we can educate people. scammers will continue to try and find new ways.

I was organising an apartment in Paris and I thought this was too good to be true - luckily I'd read this blog before and checked the IP address.

The next email I got had this included in it:

To have it reserved for you and confirm you as my flatmate, the following has to be done.

- A contract document shall be prepared by my family attorney which I shall send first to your email which you shall read and understand to serve as a guaranty that the room has been rented and reserved for you.

- The contract shall also give you guaranty of the safety of your deposit which shall be refunded to you on your last day of rent. The original copy which shall be signed and sealed shall be sent to your address for you to bring with you when coming.

To prepare the contract document,reply with the following details:

- Your full name as you want it written on the contract

- Your move in and move out dates

- Your current/home address ( where you shall recieve the original copies of the document) A copy will be emailed first to you.

- A copy of your identity card for identity verification ( I will send a copy of my passport along with the contract for your verification )
